If there are additional questions, please contact me and I’ll add responses that will benefit the group. Mahalo!
Mahalo for entering the ESPN Keiki Division Tournament! Please help us make the ESPN tournament a great experience for every player and ‘ohana…on and off the court.
Here's how to help:
Before the tournament, help your athlete trust in the skills they developed in practice. We all want the best for our athletes; however, our words can be a source of pressure, distraction and worry for our keiki. Athletes who play for the joy of the pickleball, trust their skills, and feel confident will typically perform up to their ability.
Cheer for effort. "Great hustle!" and "Nice try!" mean as much as applause for a winner.
Coaching is only allowed during timeouts. Please let the players decide if they want to be coached during a match. They want to do their best and part of learning is to be able to make decisions individually and as a team. During play, players do best when their focus is on the process, not the results.
All line calls and scoring are the responsibility of the players. Please do not make line calls audibly or with gestures. This is the responsibility of the player(s) on the side where the ball lands. If they are not sure, they call the ball in. We will do our best to find volunteers to assist the beginners with scoring. All intermediate/advanced players will call out scores before serving and keep scores on their own. We will not have referees.
Your face and body talk too. Groans, sighs, and head shakes are heard loud and clear. Keep your reactions as positive as your words.
Respect the game. Stay quiet during rallies, applaud good shots by both teams, and accept the line calls.
Be the calm in the stands. Treat opponents, officials, volunteers, and other fans with aloha.
After the match, lead with aloha. Try "I loved watching you play" and focus on what they did well. Allow the player to initiate questions about their performance when they are ready.
